Preventing, Identifying, and Repairing Dry Rot
What is dry rot?
Dry rot is fungal timber decay, resulting in cracking and powdering of the wood.
Preventing on new wood:
- Surfaces should be thoroughly caulked, and then primed and painted
Identifying dry rot:
- Soft, and brittle wood
- The wood is falling apart and chipping
- Common places are the fascia boards, window trim, boards or siding surfaces that are close to the ground
Can you paint over it?
Yes and no. Depending on the severity, It can be scraped out, treated with a dry-rot wood hardener and then painted, or, scraped out, removed and filled with bondo. You can also replace the damaged part of the board or the entire board.
If you don’t address dry rot, it spreads like a disease and the board can eventually fall off. Unfortunately it gets more expensive the longer you let it go.
