Paint Color and Psychology
Color can play on your emotions…good and bad. So here are some tips when selecting colors.1) Create the illusion of space with light colors on your exterior. Avoid using white, as it isn’t nearly as effective as tinted color and doesn’t draw your eye into your home.
2) It’s all in the name. Highly educated people prefer colors that consist of more than one word. When I do my color consulting and I’m working with a customer who is having difficulty selecting color, I use terms like “sophisticated” or “elegant” and to guide them away from a poor selection, I refer to the color as “juvenile” or “dark.” Works every time.
3) Build appetite by painting your dining room or kitchen red. It’s commonly known that red can increase your blood pressure and excite your senses.
4) Create a smooth transition between the exterior and interior by using a blend of both colors in your foyer.
5) Rich, deep color creates a cocoon effect, so in winter months, rich color can soothe. Along the same lines, use light colors in the summer to create a fresh, clean feeling.
6) You can bring back fond memories of your childhood by using colors that you lived with as a child.
7) Relaxing colors like soft blues and greens are perfect for the bedroom or meditation room. They are calming and create a soothing environment. The richer the color, the stronger the effect.
8) Use cool colors in an exercise room such as green or blue. A warm color, such as red or orange, can create the feeling of being hot, while the cool colors will extend your workouts by creating a cool environment.
9) Green in your home office inspires concentration and promotes focus
10) Yellow can inspire optimism, perfect for a sunroom or a kitchen. It’s also a good choice for the entry, as it’s the last place you see when leaving for work or school and will create an upbeat mood to start your day and greet you cheerfully at the end of the day.
Working with a color expert will help you find the right colors and intensity to suit your lifestyle. Take advantage of their knowledge and experience to create a wonderful home.
