Why do painted cabinets fail?

Why do painted cabinets fail?

Golden Oak and Maple cabinets are so prevalent in today's kitchens that were built in the 1990's and 2000's, and many homeowners want to paint them to update the look of their kitchens. With today's do it yourself shows, many people think it is easy to paint cabinets. While it is not rocket science, there are a lot of steps involved in painting cabinets. At Brooks Painting we do a cabinet job weekly and are experts in painting cabinets. We ensure that all steps are followed so that you have a long-lasting beautiful cabinet paint job.

The most common problem homeowners experience with painted cabinets is peeling paint around the sink area, and where they open the cabinets. There are two critical steps we do on every job to ensure long lasting finishes. They are cleaning the surfaces so that all the hidden oils and dirt are neutralized, and sanding the top layer so the primer can properly adhere to the old. If either of these steps is skipped, it doesn't matter what type of paint you use, the finish will not last.

Regardless if you attempt to paint your cabinets yourself or hire a professional, make sure that the cabinets are cleaned thoroughly and sanded completely. If either of these steps are skipped, you will have problems; it is only a matter of time. The other suggestions we make to every client is to install knobs or handles. Not only do they add aesthetic value, but they keep our oily hands from touching the paint. This will help extend the life of a paint job.
