More Than Ordinary Paint
There are so many choices contractors and homeowners must make when it comes to paint. What brand do you want; Sherwin Williams, Kelly-Moore, Dunn Edwards, Dulux, Benjamin Moore, Behr? Then once you select the brand, you have to select the product line you want. Then you have to select the perfect colors to use. There are so many decisions it can make your head spin. As the paint world evolves and changes, there are new innovations created that we can choose. They can really change the way you look at your home or office space. There are three products that you may not know about that we think you may want to consider. They are: magnetic paint, chalkboard paint, and dry-erase paint.
Magnetic paint is great for kitchens, office, and kids rooms. You paint a few coats of magnetic paint then paint over it with regular paint so you get the color you want. To provide a good magnetic surface it is best to do multiple base coats on a smoother surface; heavy texture can reduce the ability for magnets to stick. There are different products out there, so be very careful in what you choose. This is one of those times that you get what you pay for.
Chalkboard paint is a big hit in kid’s rooms. They get to write on their walls without getting in trouble. Make sure that you do it on lower areas of the walls so that the kids can easily write on it. You can frame it with a nice wood trim, or simply mask a boarder with tape and leave nice straight lines. Chalkboard paint has traditionally come in black, to look like a chalkboard we grew up with in school. Now some manufactures can tint it to different colors. Just like the magnetic paint, there are choices in manufactures, so make sure you research the best brand before you buy.
Dry-erase paint is probably the least known of these three specialty products. It has been around for years, and is used more in commercial settings, but it is finding its way into more homes. It is by far the priciest of the three choices, and really should be applied by a professional. It needs to be on smooth wall, it just doesn’t work well on textured walls. It must be primed first, then only one coat of dry erase paint. You have to use special rollers to get the paint to lie down smoothly. If you leave too much stipple it will not be a nice writing surface. It comes in a few different colors, the most popular being white. We have it in our conference room and love it.
